Carn Goch, the largest Iron Age fort in Wales, nearby Llandeilo; Carmarthen (Caerfyrddin) means the 'town of Merlin', the great enchanter of Arthurian Legend, also has Roman remains. The goldmines at Pumpsaint. The great Norman castles at Llansteffan,Kidwelly and Laugharne.

The Welsh princes built their own impressive castles at nearby Dinefwr and Dryslwyn. Breathtaking views of the Towy valley and Black Mountains are to be had from Carreg Cennen Castle, surely the most dramatic and wildly romantic of all Welsh fortresses. The Physicians of Myddfai practised their herbalistic skills in the nearby Brecon Beacons National; Park. The tradition lives on in the new National Botanic Garden of Wales at Middleton Hall, Llanarthne, also at Aberglasney historic house and gardens, and the Gelli Aur Country Park. Paxton’s Tower provides a commanding backdrop to Llanarthne and the enchanting Towy valley.
