Better Late - £3.7 million for Carmarthen sewers Welsh Water provides environmental boost for River TowyDŵr Cymru Welsh Water has started a £3.7 million programme of work in Carmarthen which will deliver environmental benefits to the River Towy. Work is now underway to install mechanical and electrical equipment at three wastewater pumping stations, together with work to upgrade a main sewer, which together will greatly improve the capacity of the network to cope during storm weather conditions. This programme of work will take seven months to complete and, once in operation, it will greatly improve the water quality of the River Towy. The pumping stations being upgraded are Parc Hinds Pumping Station off the Esplanade, and Pothouse Wharf and Brickyard Lane Pumping Stations, both next to the A4242. Welsh Water’s capital delivery manager Martin Kilroy said: “We are really pleased that we are now able to go ahead with this essential scheme. When it is completed it will benefit river water quality by helping the system to cope better during very bad weather. “This is a considerable investment for us at approaching four million pounds, but we plan to carry it out with the minimum of disruption to local people. Whilst we are working on the pumping station off the Esplanade, we will need to put in two way traffic lights to manage traffic flow to enable us to complete our work safely and quickly. And we aim to give regular scheme updates to the local news media to help keep people up to date with our progress.” This programme of work is being carried out by our capital investment partner Morgan Sindall, and in planning this work we have liaised closely with the local authority. Welsh Water is investing heavily and working hard to ensure top quality services to all the communities it serves. The company is investing £1.3 billion in its water and sewerage network between 2010 and 2015. It is a ‘not-for-profit company’ which has been owned by Glas Cymru since 2001. Welsh Water does not have shareholders, and any financial surpluses are reinvested in the business for the benefit of customers.
