Despite years of damage to rivers from acid rain, volunteers have managed to turn around resultant declines in salmonid populations.

CTV News reports that an ongoing project to continuously add lime particles to the West River, to help maintain pH levels, has seen a 400% increase in the river's salmon population over the last six years.  This is the only such project in North America, and costs roughly $50,000 each year.
